Key Locations

Book Sales and Exhibits: Hall B1, San Diego Convention Center: Wednesday, 12:15 p.m.-5:30 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-noon.

Email Access: Just outside Hall B, San Diego Convention Center. Open during various time frames, starting 3:00 p.m. Tuesday until 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Employment Center: Hall A, San Diego Convention Center.

Restaurants/Concierge Help:  There is restaurant/concierge desk staffed by the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau in the lobby outside Hall B2 on the first floor of the center, open Wednesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Participants will be able to get restaurant recommendations/reservations, tours, maps, event tickets, and general information about San Diego.

Student Hospitality/Information Center: Hall B1, San Diego Convention Center.

Wireless (free): Available in the San Diego Convention Center in the JMM Networking Center (upper leverl, bay side and the upper level, city side).

Instructions. 1. For Rooms/Corridors of 1-19 – Rooms 1-5 -  In the wireless browser area on your device, look for the SSID of JMM.  No username or password required.  As soon as you see "JMM", you will be able to connect directly to the internet.  2. For Rooms 6-19 -  In the wireless browser area on the device, look for the SSID of AMS.  No username or password required.  As soon as you see "AMS", you will be able to connect directly to the internet.

Informal Gatherings and Receptions

University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Mathematics Alumni and Friends Reception, Wednesday, 5:45 p.m.-7:30 p.m., Rancho Santa Fe Room, Marriott. All UW-Madison Department of Mathematics alumni and friends are invited. Please come and visit with old and new friends.

AP Calculus Reception:Thursday, 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Past, present, and future AP Calculus Readers are invited to the Kansas City Barbeque, 600 W. Harbor Dr., about a half-mile northwest of the Convention Center.  Please join us for food, drink, and continued hospitality.

The MER/IME Banquet on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. has been moved to Marina Ballroom E, Marriott thrid floor.

The University of Michigan Alumni Reception scheduled for Friday evening has been cancelled.

Annual Reception for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Mathematicians:  This informal cash bar social will take place on Friday, January 11th from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Flicks, 1017 University Ave (near the intersection of University and 10th in the Hillcrest neighborhood). It's not a large bar, so you should have no trouble finding us inside.  One may get to the bar by cab (approx. three miles from convention center), or take the #11 bus (Destination:  SDSU) from 1st Ave. and G St (bus travels north on 1st Ave) to the intersection of University and 10th.  The bus leaves every 15 minutes and the ride takes a mere 23 minutes.

Buses will be leaving 1st and G at 4:57 p.m., 5:12 p.m., 5:27 p.m., 5:42 p.m., and 5:57 p.m. Please note there is also an on-site reception on Thursday; check the official meetings program for details.

PROMYS Gathering for Alumni and Friends, Friday, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and there will be a cash bar, old friends, and good conversation in the Living Room at Marina Kitchen, Marriott (ground floor overlooking the pool).

The AMS 125th Gala, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, has been moved to San Diego Ballroom, Lobby Level, Marriott North Tower.  Tickets are available until the close of JMM Registration at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, or until the event sells out.

Exhibitor Events

Come to the Cambridge University Press exhibit (booths 210, 212, 214) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for cupcakes to celebrate the Forum of Mathematics, Cambridge's new open access publishing venture.

Ken Golden will be available to sign postcards at the MPE2013 booth 106, Friday from 11:00 am to noon.

Come to the MAA Pavilion for a "meet and greet" with Gioia de Cari on Friday from noon to 1:00 p.m.

Please join Project Euclid in booth 215 on Friday at 3:00 p.m. for wine, cheese, and a first look at the redesign of Project Euclid's website.

Announcements

The recipients of the 2013 Mathematical Art Exhibition Awards are Best photograph, painting, or print: "Bended Circle Limit III" by Vladimir Bulatov; Best textile, sculpture, or other medium: "Inlaid Wooden Boxes of Makoto Nakamura's Tessellations" by Kevin Lee; and Honorable Mention: "Tessellation Evolution" (beaded necklace) by Susan Goldstine.  See these and all the works in the Mathematical Art Exhibition in aisle 800 of the Exhibition Hall.
     The Mathematical Art Exhibition Award "for aesthetically pleasing works that combine mathematics and art" was established in 2008 through an endowment provided to the American Mathematical Society by an anonymous donor who wishes to acknowledge those whose works demonstrate the beauty and elegance of mathematics expressed in a visual art form. The awards are $400 for Best Photograph, Painting, or Print; $400 for Best Textile, Sculpture, or Other Medium; and $200 for Honorable Mention. The Mathematical Art Exhibition of juried works in various media is held at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA). These and other works in the 2013 exhibition will be in an album on Mathematical Imagery atwww.ams.org/mathimagery.

"Truth Values: One Girl's Romp Through M.I.T.'s Male Math Maze"   Catch a performance of writer/performer and "recovering mathematician" Gioia De Cari's national hit show, "Truth Values: One Girl's Romp Through M.I.T.'s Male Math Maze" at San Diego's Lyceum Theatre, just a few blocks from the Convention Center. Memorial for Philip Wagreich: With great sadness we are sorry to inform you of the unexpected passing of our colleague Phil Wagreich on January 1, 2013. There will be informal memorials for Phil at the MER/IME Banquet on Thursday evening.  Those who wish to attend but do not have tickets for the banquet, are welcome to come after the meal at 8:00 p.m. in  Marina Ballroom E, Marriott third floor. 
     Phil received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1967. He joined University of Illinois at Chicago in 1973 and retired last June. Phil made important contributions to the study of complex normal surface singularities with \CC^* action. He was one of the pioneers of mathematics education. He was one of the principal authors of the TIMS for Elementary Mathematics Curriculum. Phil served as a co-Director of the Mathematicians and Education Reform Forum. In 1992, he was awarded the Excellence in Integrated Mathematics and Science Award by the School Science and Mathematics Association and in 1996 he received the Max Beberman Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics for contributions to mathematics education in Illinois and the nation. From 1997 to 2000 he was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Principles and Standards for School Mathematics writing team that developed national standards for mathematics curriculum, teaching, and evaluation in Grades K-12.  For many years Phil served as the Director of the Institute for Mathematics and Science Education (IMSE) at UIC. Phil also served as the Director of Mathematics Education for the Mathematics department.

Ticket Resales. For those participants who find they cannot use tickets already purchased for social events, a section of the Message Board located in the Networking Center has been set aside for the posting of available tickets. Participants should tack up a message indicating the event for which the ticket is available, the price, and how to get in touch with the ticket owner. No ticket may be turned in at the Registration Desk for a refund.
