AMS Ancillary Workshops

Department Chairs Workshop

The annual workshop for department chairs will be held a day before the start of the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  This one-day session for mathematical sciences department chairs is organized in a workshop format so as to stimulate discussion among attendees. Sharing ideas and experiences with peers creates an environment that enables attending chairs to address departmental challenges from new perspectives.

Workshop leaders will be: Timothy Hodges, University of Cincinnati; Helen Roberts, Montclair State University; Alex Smith, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; and Michel Smith, Auburn University.

Past workshop sessions have focused on a range of issues facing departments, including planning and budgeting, personnel management, assessment, outreach, faculty development, communications, and departmental leadership.

NSF-EHR Grant Proposal Writing Workshop

In addition to the Department Chairs Workshop, the AMS is pleased to work with the National Science Foundation Directorate for Education and Human Resources (NSF-EHR) to offer a free workshop on Writing A Competitive Proposal to NSF-EHR. The workshop will be held on Monday, January 7, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Workshop on how to write a competitive proposal to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR).  This interactive workshop will provide information on EHR programs and prepare participants in writing a competitive proposal.

Workshop goals:  familiarize participants with current direction and priorities in NSF-EHR; familiarize participants with key EHR education research and development programs; consider common issues of competitive proposals; and prepare participants to write a competitive proposal.  Topics that will be covered include:  discussion of key programs; the merit review process and merit review criteria; discussion of scenarios – short passages drawn from proposals in the EHR portfolio designed to stimulate discussion about strengths and weaknesses of a proposal; opportunity to discuss possible proposal ideas with program officers.

Organized by Tara S. Holm, Cornell University and Samuel M. Rankin, III, AMS Associate Executive Director.  Workshop leaders include Ron Buckmire, Program Director, NSF-EHR/DUE; Janice Earle, Program Director, NSF-EHR/DRL; and Lee Zia, Program Director, NSF-EHR/DUE.
