AMS Workshop

TA Development Using Case Studies: A Workshop for Faculty
Organized by Solomon Friedberg

January 7, 2005
During the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Atlanta

Solomon Friedberg, Boston College, will guide workshop participants in the effective use of the case studies method as a tool in preparing Teaching Assistant for their important role as classroom instructors. The faculty edition of the publication Teaching Mathematics in Colleges and Universities: Case Studies for Today's Classroom, from the CBMS series Issues in Mathematics Education, will be provided to workshop participants at no charge, compliments of the AMS. For more information on the publication, visit the AMS Bookstore and enter "CBMATH/10.F" in the Quick Search window.

The workshop will be held on Friday, January 7, in two sessions, 9:30 am - 10:55 am and 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.

Travel support awards of $200 per department are available for up to ten departments. Travel support is provided by the Calculus Consortium for Higher Education, and it will be distributed to qualifying departments on a first come, first serve basis. To be eligible for this support, a faculty representative must have the department chair send a letter to the AMS stating the department's serious intent to use the case studies materials in their TA training or development program. The letter may be sent to Dr. James W. Maxwell, AMS, 201 Charles Street, Providence, RI 02904, or emailed to <klb@ams.org>.

Please contact the Membership and Programs Department at the AMS (email: klb@ams.org or phone: 401-455-4107) to request consideration for travel support.

Registration for the meeting is required to participate in this workshop. Participants may register for the meeting and sign up for this workshop on the Registration/Housing Form. The fee for this workshop is $20.

For questions about the workshop program, please contact Professor Friedberg (email: friedber@bc.edu or phone: 617-552-3002).
