Bus Trip
Eagles, Watefowl, and Gulf Coast Restoration
: Dr. Paul Kemp, Director of the National Audubon Society Louisiana Coastal Initiative, will lead this bus trip on Sunday morning (9:00 a.m. to noon) and show us some of the BP oil consequences and also restoration efforts. We expect to see wintering or migrating eagles and waterfowl. Paul led us on an eye-opener during a post-Hurricane Katrina trip at the 2007 Joint Meetings in New Orleans. Math Circles Demonstration, Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Our mathematical circles are modeled after those in Eastern Europe and are as successful here as they were there. Circles bring mathematicians into direct contact with middle and high school students to work, through the give and take of conversation, on problems that require deep thinking and creative exploration. Circles also provide a social context for these students who enjoy studying mathematics. James Tanton will demonstrate a real math circle in action--with real students!
