Public Transportation
Metrorail and Metrobus
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) system includes Metrorail and Metrobus. Public transportation runs almost all day, seven days per week. For specific directions between locations, see the Trip Planner.
Metrorail and Metrobus are efficient ways to get around Washington. Five rail lines and extensive bus service connect Washington, DC with Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Train lines are named for colors: red, yellow, blue, green, and orange. Station entrances are marked by brown pylons, capped with the letter M and colored stripes indicate which lines are available in that station. The Metro opens at 5:00 a.m. Monday–Friday, and 7:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Metro closes at midnight Sunday–Thursday, and 1:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Here is a link to the Metrorail map and the map index. The closest stops to the Convention Center are Gallery Place-Chinatown (Red, Yellow, Green Lines) and Mt Vernon Square 7th St-Convention Center (Yellow and Green Lines).
Metrorail fares are calculated by how many stops you travel and at what time of the day. Currently, fares during the day range from US\$2.25 to \$6.75. After 9:30 p.m. and on weekends, fares range from US\$2.25 to \$2.50.
Metrobus operates hundreds of routes throughout DC and the surrounding area. Bus fare is currently US\$2.25. Here is a link to the DC Metrobus map. Metrorail riders can pay for fares by tapping a contactless credit or debit card (or a card in your mobile wallet) at the faregates at any Metro station. This option is not yet available for buses. SmarTrip reusable farecards may also be purchased from vending machines in all Metrorail stations. A SmarTrip app is also available, which can be used for both MetroRail and Metrobus. Additional information can be found here.

There is no public parking at the Convention Center, however, there are over 3,000 parking spaces located within a three-block radius of the Convention Center, including surface lots and garages.
