The AMS Graduate Student Chapter Program makes meaningful contributions to the professional development of graduate students in the mathematical sciences and encourages graduate students to engage with the Society. Chapter events support the mission of the AMS to promote mathematical research, its communication and uses, encourage and promote the transmission of mathematical understanding and skills, support mathematical education at all levels, advance the status of the profession of mathematics, encouraging and facilitating full participation of all individuals, foster an awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.

How to Start your Chapter in 5 steps:
- Create your Chapter Petition and Rules of Procedure
- Submit the signed petition and rules of procedure to the Membership Department
- Receive welcome letter after AMS approval
- Complete and submit a member roster and a request for annual AMS funding
- Start planning your events and share ideas with other chapters through the AMS Graduate Student Chapters Facebook page
Ongoing Activities and Responsibilities:
- Annual Membership Roster: Allows the AMS to include all of your Chapter participants in Chapter-related communications and opportunities.
- Request for Funding: The AMS provides funding for Chapter activities and to help Chapters generate interest in mathematics among students on campus. AMS Graduate Student Chapters with at least five AMS members may request up to $350 per academic year from the AMS. Large chapters with extensive activities may request up to $400 of additional supplemental funding. The AMS will provide a Request for Funding Form that Chapters should fill out and submit electronically. Except in the initial year, requests for funding should be submitted on or before September 30 of year n for the academic year n to n+1.
- Annual Activities & Treasurer’s Report: The AMS Graduate Student Chapter will provide the AMS a report of its activities, revenue, and expenditures each year. This report is due by June 30 each year.
