The AMS is hosting its annual
one-day workshop for chairs and leaders of departments of mathematical
sciences to be held in conjunction with the Joint Mathematics
Meetings in Atlanta, Georgia. This important workshop will be
held on Wednesday, January 11, 2006, from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm in
the Marriott Rivercenter, San Antonio.
Workshop leaders will be:
Krishnaswami Alladi, Department Chair of Mathematics, University
of Florida; Deanna Caveny, Department Chair of Mathematics,
College of Charleston; David Manderscheid, Department Chair
of Mathematics, University of Iowa; and Peter March, Department
Chair of Mathematics, The Ohio State University.
The workshop format is intended
to stimulate discussion among attending chairs and workshop leaders.
Sharing ideas and experiences with peers provides a form of department
chair therapy, creating an environment that enables attending
chairs to address departmental matters from new perspectives.
Past workshop sessions have
focused on a range of issues facing departments today including:
personnel issues (staff and faculty), long range planning, hiring,
promotion and tenure, budget management, assessments, outreach,
stewardship, junior faculty development, communication, and department
leadership.
There is a registration fee
for the workshop of $75, which includes lunch and a post-workshop
reception. If you would like to attend the workshop, please complete
the RSVP form located at http://www.ams.org/government/ChairsWorkshop2006.RSVPForm.pdf
and return it along with your check as outlined on the form. The
RSVP form also includes space for your input in helping to identify
important and timely topics that should be addressed at this workshop.
Agenda, materials and location
information will be sent to all registered attendees prior to
the meeting.
Reminder: Although the Chairs
Workshop will be held the day before the Joint Mathematics Meetings
begin, you must register for the workshop separately from the
joint meetings, as outlined above. Remember to make your hotel
reservations to accommodate an early arrival.
